An urban Scavenger Hunt game that bridges that gap between the online and offline social presence for small businesses in Seattle

A Project for Design Jam For Civics 2022

Time: 4 Hour user research & 8 Hour ideate + prototype

PROBLEM

"how might we solidify the presence of small retail stores in our cities?"

CLIENT

Intrigue Chocolate Co

Pioneer Square, Seattle, WA

PAIN POINTS

  • lack of consumer awareness about products

  • absence of stories behind the small business owners

  • lack of opportunities to get consumers in front of the product (largest potential for conversion)

Design Jam is a fast-paced agile design project that holds by the University of Wahington's Human Centered Design department each year. Each group has team members of 4-6 and an assigned client.

 

Throughout October 2022, participating HCDE students were grouped into seven teams to conduct research and generate a unique problem statement. The students conducted research with businesses, residents, and civics organizations located in Seattle's neighborhoods of Columbia City, Pioneer Square, Central District, International District, and University District. 

On November 4, 2022, the teams spent the day (estimated 7 hours) ideating on their research and generating low-fidelity prototypes that they presented to the other Design Jam participants, as well as mentors HCDE Professor and Chair Julie Kientz, Rachael Cicero, and Avery Barnes, owner of Taswira in Pioneer Square.

We designed an experiential urban scavenger hunt that leverages offerings from mom-and-pop stores in Pioneer Square, increasing community engagement, tourism, and neighborhood knowledge.
